The Brooklyn Gypsies with Troy Simms, Brandon Lewis, Carmen Estevez , and Tina Kristina will be in residence at Rock On July 15-22.
Rock On is looking forward to offering a focus on percussion and drumming this Summer with Dr. Eddie Ade Knowles of RPI whose expertise is African and Afro-Cuban music and dance, as well as The Brooklyn Gypsies featuring the Latin percussion specialties of Carmen Estevez.
Ms. Estevez, who also tours with virtuoso guitar player and Grammy winner, Hernan Romero, performed on Broadway with Savion Glover in his show “Solo in Time” and has worked with pianist Sean Wayland, DJ Joe Claussel, tap dancer Marshall Davis, and jazz bass player Andy McCloud.
Carmen grew up in Montijo, Spain. Influenced by her parents, Damaso Estevez, a drummer, and Carmen Calero, a singer, she began studying the clarinet at the Conservatorio de Musica of Montijo at age eight. She began touring at age 18, as a pop singer with the band “Super 8.”
After discovering her passion for the drums, Carmen moved to Madrid and studied percussion at Escuela Superior de Musica Creativa. There, she worked as a percussionist and singer with Sedyu, Rogerio Da Sousa, Henrik Takkenberg, Inma Serrano, Jose Luis Moran (Madridcaibo), Ron Jackson, Roman Filiu (Irakere) and performed in musical theater productions such as “Hoy No Me Puedo Levantar” (Nacho Cano).
In 2008, her interest in all things percussion led her to The Collective School of Music in New York City where she became the staff percussionist and worked closely with Bob Quaranta and Kim Plainfield for three years.
Ms. Estevez also created her own flamenco/jazz trio Flamenkina, and performed with “Flamenco Revolucion” with Maya de Silva & los Chavales del Barrio, and Arturo “Espiritu Gitano” Martinez. She performed at The New York Gypsy Festival in 2010, Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana…) She has teamed up with Brandon Lewis, a Rock On alumni, on ” V Zone”, a sound adventure, of action and magic, created by B RiddimZ and Cave.
Miss Estevez brings a wealth of experience to share with students at Rock On and we are excited to offer this fresh musical perspective. Read on and download the MP3 below featuring The Brooklyn Gypsies with Carmen Estevez ….

Not to mention, Estevez’s smoky vocals and multi-layered sampling gives it a unique sound that transports the listener into an aural trip around the world.
